Not sure if your multivitamin should include iron? You’re not alone. This is one of the most common questions I get when recommending a multi like Phytomulti by Metagenics.
Let’s walk through how to know if you need a multivitamin with iron, and why not all iron is created equal.

Why Iron Matters More Than You Think
Iron isn’t just about preventing anemia. It’s critical for:
Getting oxygen to your cells
Supporting brain function and mental clarity
Helping you feel energized and focused
And yet — many people are walking around mildly deficient and have no idea. That lingering fatigue, low motivation, or foggy thinking? Iron could be part of the story.
Common Symptoms of Iron Deficiency
If your body is low in iron, you might feel:
Tired all the time, even after sleeping
Weak or short of breath
Cold hands and feet
Brain fog or trouble focusing
Pale skin or brittle nails
More frequent headaches
These symptoms are common but easy to miss or mistake for something else. That’s why testing is key.
Testing: The Right Way to Check Your Iron Levels
If you think low iron might be a problem, the best way to know is through a blood test. Here’s what I usually look at:
Ferritin (your iron storage marker)
Serum iron
Transferrin saturation
Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC)
It’s important to get these before starting any iron supplement. Too much iron isn’t good either.
If you’re not sure what tests to ask for, book a discovery call and I can point you in the right direction.
Why Some Iron Supplements Are Hard to Tolerate
Ever taken an iron pill that made you feel worse?
Constipation, nausea, or stomach upset are super common.
That’s because many brands use iron salts (like ferrous sulfate) that are hard on your gut.
Plus, if you have any gut health issues (inflammation, IBS, poor absorption), you might not be absorbing much iron in the first place.
Iron also needs co-factors like vitamin C, B12, and folate to be properly absorbed and used by your body. Many basic iron pills don’t include these.
Foods and Habits That Can Block Iron Absorption
Even if you’re eating enough iron or supplementing, your body might still struggle to use it if you:
Drink tea or coffee with meals (these contain tannins that block absorption)
Eat high-calcium meals at the same time (calcium competes with iron)
Take iron with antacids or high-fiber meals
Small changes like taking iron on an empty stomach or with vitamin C-rich foods can make a big difference.
Why Not Just Take a Separate Iron Pill?
Good question — and here's why I usually don't recommend that:
Most standalone iron pills are poorly absorbed and cause stomach upset
They often don’t include the co-nutrients needed to help your body use the iron
They’re harder to stick with long term, especially if you feel worse taking them
When you choose a well-formulated multivitamin like Phytomulti with iron included, you get support that’s easier to absorb and part of a complete nutrient strategy.
Why Phytomulti with Iron is Different
Phytomulti includes a well-tolerated, gentle form of iron, combined with the co-nutrients your body needs to actually use it.
Includes methylated B12 & folate, plus vitamin C
Contains iron bisglycinate, a chelated form that’s easier on the gut
Designed for absorption and results, not just label claims
This makes it a great option for those who need a multi with iron support but can’t tolerate harsh iron pills.
When NOT to Take Extra Iron
You may not need iron if:
You’re male and not iron deficient
You’re post-menopausal
You have a condition like hemochromatosis (iron overload)
Your iron panel is already normal or high
In these cases, the iron-free version of Phytomulti may be a better fit.
What Happens When Your Iron Levels Come Back Up?
Once your body has what it needs, people often notice:
More energy and stamina
Improved focus and mental clarity
Fewer headaches and better sleep
Better mood and fewer "crash" days
Iron affects your red blood cells, oxygen delivery, and energy systems — so once it's back in balance, you really do feel the difference.
Still Not Sure Which Version is Right for You?
If you're feeling confused, you're not alone. I talk about this with clients all the time.
Here's what I recommend:
If you're tired, pale, or foggy-headed — get tested.
If you’ve been told you're low in iron — Phytomulti with iron may be a great fit.
If you feel good and don’t have signs of low iron — stick with the iron-free version.
